Latest Shooter’s Profile with Virginia bred photographer Maya Hockaday.  She has been killing the behind the scenes photo down in Atlanta for different artists and people within the Atlanta music scene.  Check out the profile below to get to know about her and her story.

What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Maya Hockaday & I’m a photographer.

Where are you from and how has being there affected your creativity?
I’m Virginia bred 😎, the 757 to be exact.
Being there inspired my creativity because I had great mentors and people who helped groom me. VA also has a lot of water so that always help my mind go in another place.

Explain what initially got you into shooting?
Well my mom was a photographer when she was younger; and I struggled with some things growing up, especially high school. So my mom told me one day that I needed an outlet and that maybe I should pick up a camera. And I did just that. And it changed me, I fell in love with it. & now 10 years later I still love it like I did one day 1. So I owe it to my mom (RIP Mommy Dearest)

Explain what does an average day look like for you?
Lol My days definitely vary since I moved to ATL last year, but mainly working at the Apple Store and leaving there going straight to the studio to shoot my boy Chip. He’s definitely very season in the music industry so we always go to somewhere I haven’t been before and I’m always meeting people I see on tv lol or people who are heavyweights in the industry. So my days are always ambiguous but exciting.

What things do you look at or watch for inspiration?
I always people watch lol. That sounds creepy but I’m always trying to pay attention to how people move to know when to get the best shot. I also pay very close attention to detail..The skyline in ATL is beautiful to me every time I see it. So sometimes I will walk around in the city and see what it looks like inside the Skyline.

What camera setup do you currently use (camera, lens, other accessories, etc)?
I currently shoot with a canon t3i w| a 1.8 50mm lens

What do you specialize in or what do you enjoy shooting the most and why?
What I’m currently focusing on is BTS (Behind The Scenes) and I will say it is my favorite area of photography. I love music & my older sister is a music engineer. I know the work that goes into it. So I love being able to capture someone’s journey in their music. Music tells a story, so do photos.

Since we believe that music is the center around all things creative, what are your top 3 music albums, and what about those albums that gets you in a creative zone?
Ughhh, that’s hard. Umm..well Royalty: Chris Brown goes without saying. Something bout Chris man..he definitely has creativity on lock. VII: Teyana Taylor is also a FAV..I love her sound, she’s like young Anita Baker. & for the 3rd..I love Stoned On Ocean & Canal Street Confidential: Curren$y the Hot Spitta. Curren$y helps me relax, like he’s very monotone, very mellow. Some people don’t like it, I think it makes him unique.

Who are some shooters that you follow and what do you admire about their work?
I actually work with a team in VA called Vizually Inklined (VizInk). Those guys are phenomenal photographers/videographers. I’ve been working with them for about 3 years now. So I’ve learned a lot. I follow all of their work, I think they’ve taught me the most out of anybody. My guys (Treezy, Marcus, Kory, Beans)shoot music videos and the photographer Dexter..that man is nuts with his camera. He’s in love with what he does forreal. I admire that. He has taught me patience with this art form.

What is one tangible piece of advice that you would give somebody who has just started shooting?

My advice is NEVER STOP SHOOTING. Hold onto it if it’s what you’re really passionate about. Also GET A MENTOR.

Random Question: What would you describe as your perfect day?
Definitely no Genius Bar lol. but I would get up, watch Fresh Prince, FaceTime Chip see where we’re at for the day. Hit the studio with him capture it all on camera, good food of course, view of the city (photos), probably do some shopping. Then ride through the city at night for the photos and call it a Perfect Day 😎
