What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Joshua Maclin and I am an artist. Music is my first love. I have been a drummer since before I can remember, playing for multiple bands, in and outside of school, as well a church every Sunday. I work with 4-H as a program facilitator, teaching youth the creative process through filmmaking and photography. Currently studying sociology and business at Virginia Commonwealth University, my hopes are to continue working with youth in the digital media/art field in addition pursuing a professional career in photography.
Where are you from and how has being there affected your creativity?
I am from a small town in Chesterfield County called Ettrick, Va. Living in the 804 area has had positive effects on my creativity to an extent. I have been fortunate enough to connect with some pretty amazing creatives in the area, a lot of which have become great friends, and I feel that although this place doesn’t provide a huge amount of opportunity like a New York or Los Angeles, I have been able to make the best of every situation positive or negative.
Explain what initially got you into shooting?
Although i’ve always had some interest in capturing moments, working with 4-H as a kid ignited my passion to pursue of creative career. I picked up my first DSLR with aspirations of becoming a filmmaker initially. After a year or so I began to get more and more photo jobs and as business grew I started to gravitate more towards a career in photography.
Explain what does an average day look like for you?
An average day for me consists of, waking up randomly at 7am, trying to sleep again, failing, going to class, then rehearsal, then editing/homework, repeat.
What things do you look at or watch for inspiration?
To gather inspiration I tend to binge watch youtube videos/vlogs/short films as well as endlessly searching through Pinterest, tumblr, and Instagram until I have to force myself to stop.
What camera setup do you currently use (camera, lens, other accessories, etc)?
My current great list is as follows: Canon 6D; 50 f1.8, 85 f1.8, 24-70 f2.8; a few flashes and strobes; other studio gear (backdrops, reflectors, etc.).
What do you specialize in or what do you enjoy shooting the most and why?
I absolutely love shooting fashion and beauty portraiture. I am so passionate about these two types of photography because it is where I get display my creativity in addition to being able to work with a team of creatives. Collaboration is so important to me; I cherish and value each and every person’s creative opinion while on set and it always yields a better result than what I could have done on my own.
Since we believe that music is the center around all things creative, what are your top 3 music albums, and what about those albums that gets you in a creative zone?
My go-to music to get in the zone is literally whatever I’m feeling like for that day. One day i’d throw on some Kendrick, the next Hiatus Kaiyote, and another day I might throw on a Soulection playlist or some random Chillstep playlist off youtube.
Who are some shooters that you follow and what do you admire about their work?
Shamayaim, Sasha Samsonova, and An Le. This list is super forced as I admire so many photographers. These guys are just the top three that I’ve been pulling inspo from recently.
What is one tangible piece of advice that you would give somebody who has just started shooting?
If I had to give one piece of advice to a new shooter it would be a two part answer; STAY HUMBLE and always keep shooting, no matter what pick up that camera and go create something!
