Check out the latest Shooter’s Profile with the self proclaimed Jesus’ Favorite Photographer, Codeine Spree.
TRS: What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Jay aka @CodeineSpree aka Jesus’ favorite photographer, and Im a photographer lol
TRS: Where are you from and how has being there affected your creativity?
Born and raised in Brooklyn. Brooklyn makes you keep your eyes open ALL the time. There’s constantly stuff going on both good and bad so you just gotta stay aware and that just made me really observant to the world.
TRS: Explain what initially got you into shooting?
I took it briefly in Junior High and wasn’t feeling the fact a teacher could fail you or even tell you how to view something so I dropped it. A bunch of years later my bro @Jwnchstr started shooting and I fell back in love with it.
TRS: Explain what does an average day look like for you?
I shoot with my bros ALOT.
TRS: What things do you look at or watch for inspiration?
My bros. We all got individual things going on but we move so much as a unit its crazy. @jwnchstr @Rikys.eye @Martinez_photos. I don’t watch many photographers outside of my gang so its really just me seeing what they do, take note, try to put my own twist and one up them, and they do the same thing to me so its a big cycle.
TRS: What camera setup do you currently use (camera, lens, other accessories, etc)?
Ive recently started running with a Canon 5Dmii and Canon 50mm majority of the time, the godly 24mm L series is coming soon lol.
TRS: What do you specialize in or what do you enjoy shooting the most and why?
When me and JJay really decided to push our photography we tried to get in as many abandoned buildings as possible to catch crazy looking sh*t and we ran with that for a bit but then we started walking all over manhattan after work and we started catching portraits of unsuspecting people and the kinda sparked our portrait craze. Id say I specialize in portraiture and abandoned buildings but give me my camera and a snapple and ill shoot ANYTHING.
TRS: Since we believe that music is the center around all things creative, what are your top 3 music albums, and what about those albums that gets you in a creative zone?
Music definitely gets me in my creative space usually during my editing process. Lately its been straight Luv Is Rage-Lil Uzi Vert, Futures whole catalog for the past 3 years and G4shi – Switch Up stays on repeat right now. I’ve been listening to Future for some time and its his lack of giving a sh*t and saying things that everyone thinks but scared to say is what really drew me to him. Lil Uzi’s first project just makes me relate to him. He wears the same thing as me, same age bracket, he speaks on his relationship a lot but he’s super honest and not politically correct. G4shi is a animal. H record Switch Up is literally my life in a nutshell. People always show love from far and I hate that.
TRS: I see on your IG page that you use the hashtag #ShootTheHood, what made you think of that and what do you like about shooting images in the streets?
Me and JJay had hit majority of the abandoned spots close to us so things slowed up a little. Id always be in my hood or the hood I spent my early life in (Flatbush). Theres so much to see all over my hood and I appreciate what the hood has to offer. I started to travel further away from my neighborhood and and it represents that everyone has a hood no matter where your from so we use it all over for our street photography. My bros really supported it and use the hashtag and a few others have jumped on board and supported so we just keeping it moving. I wanna see everyones hood soon.
TRS: Who are some shooters that you follow and what do you admire about their work?
My whole gang that I mentioned earlier are some of the only photographers I pay attention to. I get where they come from. we all learn with each other but all shoot totally different so its kinda like we got all of our bases covered. Outside of my squad @NevaSatisfied is a favorite of mine and one of the first big photographers I paid attention to and is a homie of mine so i always try to peep what he’s been doing. @Vuhlandes is probably my favorite photographer just because he doesn’t shoot things the masses wants to see. He shoots for himself and if you rock with it cool if not, then thats fine cuz it wasn’t made for you anyways
TRS: What is one tangible piece of advice that you would give somebody who has just started shooting?
Have tough skin. People are going to draw conclusions any way so you might as well shoot what you want. Take your time and have tough skin.
TRS: Random Question: If you could be any animal on the world, what would you be and why?
Maybe them turtles that be living mad long lol. I’m lowkey weird so I be alone. I don’t be seeing turtles chillin with mad turtles so yea ill be a turtle… and id have my whole crib on my back.
TRS: What is next for you?
Just getting better. Kicking off the ShootTheHood IG page to feature other peoples talent. Working with brands and turning my home into a studio to work out of. Also work more with my bros on collab efforts that’s really it for the near future.
TRS: Where can people find you?
Instagram @CodeineSpree is the best place to find my work and interact with me.
