What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Antwon Maxwell and I am Beauty and Fashion Photographer
Where are you from and how has being there affected your creativity?
I am from Washington DC and being from this city has affected my creativity in so many ways. This city has so much character and give me the ability to connect with so many different people that share common interest from Makeup Artist to Creative Directors.
Explain what initially got you into shooting?
I initially got into shooting from watching one of my good friends and mentor James Anthony. I’ve always admired his photography and the way he tells stories through his images.
Explain what does an average day look like for you?
Well currently I am a full time Government employee for the Department of Interior so I do a lot of my photography in the evenings and weekends. My evenings consist of retouching and researching different lighting techniques for upcoming shoots that I have, also recording videos for my Youtube channel where I teach others my retouching and lighting techniques.
What things do you look at or watch for inspiration?
I always like to look at different magazines like Elle, or Vogue for inspiration. Also I am always checking out Youtube for different retouching techniques or Instagram.
What is a quote or motto that you live by?
Well I teach photography and retouching to a lot of people and what I have found is that a lot of them are very impatient about the outcome of their work and what I always tell them you have to give you work some “TLC” Time, Love and Care.
What camera setup do you currently use (camera, lens, other accessories, etc)?
Currently I am shooting with a Canon 5DMarkii, Canon 24-105L lens, Canon 70-200L Lens and 100L prime Macro Lens. I use 4 pocket wizards, and also shoot in a local studio that provides majority of the lights and Modifiers.
What do you specialize in or what do you enjoy shooting the most and why?
I Enjoy shooting beauty and fashion. I love shooting beauty images because it shows off my skill at retouching and lighting but it also shows off the model and Makeup Artist. I am a team player and I am always up for everyone getting recognition. Fashion photography is another love of mine because I love telling stories through fashion shoots and it helps that my wife is a fashion designer so I am always able to shoot my idea for free lol.
Since we believe that music is the center around all things creative, what are your top 3 music albums, and what about those albums that gets you in a creative zone?
Well I am a fan of all types of music so if I am shooting in studio always ask the client what their type of music they would like to listen too because it’s all about getting them in the mood. If I am retouching I like to listen to something a little softer like Dwele, Erykah Badu or Frank Ocean.
Who are some shooters that you follow and what do you admire about their work?
Well I follow my mentor James Anthony, I love how he tells stories with his images. Another photog that I follow is Karl Lagerfeld. I love is style and how he interacts with the clients, his work looks so clean. I hope when I am his age I am still able to be that fashionable and be that cool.
What is one tangible piece of advice that you would give somebody who has just started shooting? (besides shooting more)
Research, find out what type of photographer you want to be, learn your weapon i.e. your camera and lights. You can’t be a professional photographer and don’t know what it means to shoot in RAW or Manual. Separate yourself from everyone else.
What is next for you?
This year I am planning on doing some different type of shoots that are not my norm. I am looking to shoot food and products.
Where can people find you?
